Emergency Treatment

When to call right away

Severe pain, facial swelling, a knocked-out tooth, an avulsed restoration, or any oral trauma should be treated as an emergency. Acting quickly often determines whether a tooth can be saved and how comfortable your recovery will be.

What to do for a knocked-out tooth

Hold the tooth by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it in milk or saline, and try to reposition it in the socket. If that isn't possible, store it in milk and call us immediately — re-implantation is most successful within the first hour.

What counts as a dental emergency

Not every dental problem needs to be seen today, and part of our job on the phone is telling you which is which. Severe or worsening pain, facial or gum swelling, a tooth that has been knocked out or pushed out of position, bleeding that will not stop, and any injury to the jaw all need attention right away.

A chipped edge with no pain, a rough filling, or a crown that came off cleanly is urgent but usually not same-hour. We will still get you in quickly, and we will tell you what to do in the meantime so nothing gets worse while you wait.

  • Severe, throbbing or spreading tooth pain
  • Swelling in the face, jaw or gum, especially with fever
  • A tooth knocked out, loosened or pushed out of place
  • A fracture that exposes the inside of the tooth
  • A lost crown, filling or temporary that leaves a tooth sharp or sensitive
  • Bleeding after an injury that does not slow with gentle pressure

What to do in the first hour

Call the office first. Symptoms tell us a great deal, and the right first step is different for a knocked-out tooth than it is for swelling or a fracture. If we are closed, the message on our line tells you how to reach us.

For a knocked-out adult tooth, hold it by the crown rather than the root, rinse it briefly in milk or saline, and try to place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep it in milk and come in immediately — the first hour matters most. For pain and swelling, a cold compress on the outside of the cheek helps; heat does not. Rinse with warm salt water, keep the area clean, and avoid pressing on the tooth.

How we relieve pain

Getting you comfortable comes before anything elective. Depending on what we find, that may mean opening and cleaning an infected tooth, smoothing or rebuilding a fractured edge, re-cementing a crown, treating the gum tissue, or removing a tooth that cannot be saved.

We explain what is causing the pain and what each option involves before we begin, including anything that can wait for a later visit. Emergency treatment often has two parts: settle the problem now, restore the tooth properly once it has calmed down.

Fees and payment during an emergency

You get the fee for emergency treatment before we start, not after. Nobody should be surprised by a bill while they are in pain.

Although we are not in network with any dental plans, we will submit claims to your insurance electronically so you can maximize your out-of-network benefits. CareCredit is available for qualified applicants when treatment is more extensive than expected.

Is it right for you?

Who this tends to suit

Often a good fit

  • Pain, swelling or an injury that started recently and is not improving
  • A broken tooth, lost crown or lost filling
  • A visitor or seasonal resident who needs care while in The Villages
  • Anyone unsure whether what they are feeling should be seen today

Worth discussing first

  • Heavy bleeding, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a serious facial injury — go to an emergency room first
  • Swelling that is spreading toward the eye or down the neck, which needs urgent medical care
  • Long-standing discomfort with no swelling, which is better handled as a scheduled exam
  • Pain after recent treatment elsewhere, so we know what has already been done
