Professional whitening versus the drugstore aisle

Professional gels are stronger and are used with trays made from a scan of your own teeth, so the gel stays on the enamel instead of washing over the gums. That combination is what produces an even result rather than a patchy one.

Whitening works on enamel, not on dental work

Crowns, veneers, bonding, and fillings do not lighten. If you have visible restorations on your front teeth, we plan the shade first so everything matches when you are finished.

Why teeth darken

Two things are usually happening at once. Surface stain builds up from coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco and sits on the outside of the enamel. Underneath, the dentine naturally deepens in colour with age while enamel thins, so more of that warmer layer shows through.

Whitening gel works on both, which is why professional treatment can lighten teeth that a cleaning alone does not change. What it will not do is alter the colour of a crown, veneer, or filling.

In-office or take-home

An in-office visit uses a stronger gel under supervision and gives you a visible change the same day — useful when there is a date on the calendar. Take-home trays use a gentler gel over a couple of weeks, which suits sensitive teeth and makes touch-ups easy later.

Many patients do both: start in the chair, then keep the trays for maintenance. We will recommend one based on your starting shade, your sensitivity, and your timeline.

  • A short exam first, to confirm whitening is appropriate
  • Any cleaning or treatment needed before you begin
  • In-office session, custom trays, or both
  • Written aftercare, including the first 48 hours
  • A follow-up look at the result and the shade achieved

Sensitivity, and how we manage it

Temporary sensitivity during and just after whitening is common and settles on its own. It is more likely with the strongest gels, with existing recession, and with exposed root surfaces.

We reduce it by choosing the concentration deliberately, spacing sessions out, and using a desensitising toothpaste beforehand. If your teeth are already sensitive, say so at the exam — a slower take-home approach usually works better than pushing through.

Keeping the result

For the first 48 hours the enamel picks up colour more easily, so avoid coffee, tea, red wine, curry, and tomato sauces during that window. After that, normal habits are fine.

Whitening is not permanent — teeth gradually drift back toward their previous shade over months to years, depending on what you drink and whether you smoke. Keeping your trays means a short refresh instead of starting over.

Fees and payment

Whitening is quoted before treatment, with in-office and take-home options priced separately so you can choose. Nothing is scheduled until you have the fee.

Cosmetic whitening is generally not a covered insurance benefit. Although we are not in network with any dental plans, we will submit claims to your insurance electronically so you can maximize your out-of-network benefits where a claim applies.

Is it right for you?

Who this tends to suit

Often a good fit

  • Healthy teeth and gums with general yellowing or surface stain
  • An event or set of photographs on the calendar
  • Coffee, tea, or red wine staining that a cleaning does not remove
  • Anyone who wants the most conservative cosmetic option first

Worth discussing first

  • Untreated decay, gum disease, or an exposed root — treated first
  • Crowns, veneers, or bonding on the front teeth, which will not lighten
  • Existing sensitivity, which changes the gel and the pace
  • Single dark teeth or deep internal staining, which may need a different approach
